A Milestone Album August 11, 2010 Bill Mobley (Atlanta, Georgia United States) When Love Alive was released in the 70's I think I was 18. This album really changed the direction of gospel music. Almost all of the popular gospel singers nowadays owe a debt to Love Alive. The album was released with little fanfare. A girl in our choir at the time, brought the album to rehearsal one night. I remember reading the cover and thinking, "Walter Hawkins, just another gospel album." But, all of a sudden, I don't know what happened, young people in most choirs (mostly black, I think) around the nation wanted to sing every song from this album. Walter Hawkins, Tramaine and company, captured the heart of young people in a way that, as far as I could tell, hadn't been done before. Grown-ups got sick of us singing the songs: "If them young folks go up yonder one more time I'm gonna faint." But the album truly ushered in a new turning point in gospel music. Some may disagree with me, but gospel music entered the modern era with this release. Had it not been for Love Alive, choirs would still be singing stuff like, "Soon as my Feet Strike Zion, I'm gonna lay down my heavy burdens..."
And that's not to say we don't still sing stuff like that once in a while.

One of the Very Best Gospel Albums February 4, 2008 thesavvybamalady (Prichard, Alabama USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
One of the main reasons I bought this cd was when I was a teen in church back in the Bronx,N.Y., our chior used to sing these same songs, and some years later, I discovered a cassette at my parent's home and it just brought back the memories. I recently bought this cd and Love Alive 2 since they bring back great memories, and I tell you, they are truly some of the very best gospel albums out there of all time. It makes you want to raise your hands in the air and give God the praise. Worth the listen and brings back good memories.

...I hope to come back as Tramaine Hawkins, or at least be good enough to sing in Walter Hawkins' choir. "Goin Up Yonder" is one of my all-time favorite gospel songs, and on a bad day it's a good reminder to find joy in today. Tramaine's voice is enough to make it all better. Every track on this cd is wonderful. I absolutely adore "I Love the Lord" and "Changed". And "God Is Standing By" is some kind of contagious, house-shaking singing, especially the second half. This cd would have to come with me if I only had 5 to take.

I highly recommend Alive 1 & 2 to those of us who remember the days of the 70s when gospel songs came alive. The Hawkins Family sung their songs with an anointing. The words of their songs could be understood, and they touch my soul deeply. I had been searching for these old songs, and I was delighted to find them on Amazon. I have ordered my set, and will enjoy them another 20 years! Get them, you won't be sorry!
