Amazon.com Brigitte Nielsen, as Conan creator Robert E. Howard's female warrior Red Sonja, gets an assist from Arnold Schwarzenegger in this enjoyably campy, Italian-lensed sword & sorcery adventure. Nielsen's thespian skills may be a bit stiff, but she certainly fills out the physical demands of the role, which asks her to look impressive with a sword as she avenges the death of her priestess sister and the theft of a sacred orb by an evil queen (Sandahl Bergman, also from the '82 theatrical Conan and a match for Nielsen's acting ability). Schwarzenegger (not playing Howard's barbarian king) lends some star power in a supporting role as a warrior assisting Sonja, and if the film stumbles in the acting, scripting, and special-effects departments, Richard Fleischer's direction and cinematography Giuseppe Rotunno are appropriately action-heavy and comic-book colorful (Fleischer also directed Conan the Destroyer and The Vikings); Ennio Morricone's bombastic score is another plus. --Paul Gaita

Great movie with Swartzennegger August 9, 2010 Carroll A. Peterson (Sioux Falls, SD USA) It fills a hole in the Conan series, even the main character has a different name (?). I did enjoy it.
Red Sonja July 9, 2010 penny wicks Good action movie, not the best acting on the part of Sandahl Bergman. But was good for the type of movie it is. Other actors were really good and loved the little boy in this one. He was really good and played his part quite well. Arnold and Brigitte were very good in their roles.
The Power of the Female Mullet June 14, 2010 Del Keyes (In The Middle of the Sunshine) A world is in great danger by threat of an evil power, and the only people can save it is a 10-year-old Latino surf ninja, a glutton New Yorker, and an Austrian and a Danish who both can barely speak English. Hopefully, what I just typed has made an image in your head to realize just how stupid "Red Sonja" really is, but it became entertaining because of it. Nothing got me into a grander time than watching Brigitte Nielson deliver such hammy and forced dialogue like "Gedren...QUEEN Gedren" or "Someone needs TO get a little spanking". Schwarzenegger as Conan---I mean Kalidor---was a pretty hammy character too, but this is Ahnold we're talking about. It's amazing that the best actor of the whole movie is that 10-year-old child named Tarn who existence, alongside his glutton guard Falkon, is being annoying comic-relifs. Because action films really needs annoying comic reliefs.
What I didn't enjoy for the wrong reasons were mainly the design and pacing. Because it's made in the '80s, Red Sonja has to look incredibly tacky: her ugly hair, flimsy costume, and practically her overall posture makes her appear totally unflattering. As for the pacing, there's a lot of extended padding that went on in the movie: one scene had the villainess Queen Gedren walk slowly from her cult chamber to her throne in a couple of shots, and early on, the bad guys had to depart from a conquered religious palace while a slow-moving mechanism in the middle of the room arduously closes itself. Seems to me it's all been manipulated from the director to achieve a feature-length time.
The fights are awkwardly choreography, but then that's part of the fun. Watching Red Sonja wobbly swings her weapon, the bad guys making incompetently silly choices, people wearing godawful attire, and how Ahnold is constantly taking attention from the movie, it's fantasy goofiness. I did actually enjoy the music score by Ennio Morricone, even if does use the same battle theme ad nauseum, and the epic atmosphere was still there. If you want a competent fantasy tale from the early lore, this is not worth your time. Time like this should be spend for those who lavish in the poor quality; it's cheesy, but it's cheesy entertainment.
Where's Conan? February 12, 2010 Patrick McMahon (Higbee, MO) The only way this movie could be worse is if Arnold wasn't in it. A real dud. Brigitte Nielsen is nice to look at but she can't carry this movie on looks alone. A waste of Arnold's time. If you're looking for a third "Conan" movie this isn't it.
Red Sonja January 15, 2010 Arnita D. Brown (USA) After her family is murdered a young woman named Red Sonja becomes a master of the sword and seeks revenge on the evil queen responsible for the mayhem that has befallen her. Also, it seems the queen has stolen a powerful, carefully guarded, glowing orb right before it was meant to be destroyed, one that has powers of its' own, allowing for the possessor to control elemental forces and call down storms and earthquakes, if they so wish. Kalidor, one of the individuals in place to oversee the destruction of the orb, joins forces with Red Sonja, as their paths may differ, but they ultimately lead to the same place. An impudent, young prince named Tarn and his guard/manservant Falkon, whose kingdom was unceremoniously wiped out by Gerden as a test for her newfound powers, soon joins them. Entertaining movie, it's Arnold Schwarzenegger.
